Description

Description
Demonstration of an initial low resolution atmosphere only cycling global model (prototype P1) in the global-workflow. This will not have any substantial scientific validation and is purely intended to be a demonstration of technical capabilities and ensure that the engineering is sufficiently completed to produce a cycled system without GSI that does not produce unrealistic forecasts or cause the model to crash. The analysis would be 3DVar only and this prototype would not include any ensemble component.

Deliverables
Capability in NCEP’s global-workflow develop branch to cycle a low resolution atmosphere-only version of the coupled model candidate for GFSv17
YAML files in GDASApp for 3DVar, static B, and associated configuration for JEDI atmospheric 3DVar
Low resolution near real time parallel cycling system running on a NOAA RDHPCS platform that produces short term forecasts for demonstration purposes

Research direction

Start by reviewing the global-workflow develop branch and the existing GDASApp YAML configuration for JEDI atmospheric 3DVar, static B, and related settings. Then examine how a low-resolution atmosphere-only cycle is deployed on a NOAA RDHPCS platform. Done means the requested prototype capability, configuration, and demonstration cycling system are available as described.
