Currently, the temperature from surface stations is defined in spoc and jcb-gdas as airTemperature. However, airTemperature is also used for upper air temperature from sondes, which includes a vertical coordinate. To avoid future confusion, we should rename the station temperature to make it clear that this is in fact station temperature - IIRC airTemperatureAt2M is the standard.
The station temperature observations needs to be bias corrected to account for differences in terrain between the model and observation elevation. In the GSI, this is done by assuming a constant lapse rate, which will be the starting point in JEDI too
