Description
The codebase itself is quite procedural and as such has many many cases where the same logic is duplicated. We should identify as much of the duplication as we can and then use functions etc. to reduce it.

Research direction
Start by surveying the Python codebase to identify repeated procedural logic and group similar cases. The issue names no files, entry points, or tests, so first establish the duplication scope and relevant test coverage. Done means the identified duplication has been consolidated without changing plotting behavior, with the existing tests still passing.
