Research direction
Start by running the reproduction in the issue and focus on the item.reload() entry point with a ReferenceField pointing to the abstract Place class. Trace how the reference is resolved during reload, then add a regression test for this example; done means reloading item succeeds and preserves its referenced Inventory document.
