Description

I don't know if this is a provider issue or a controller issue, so I apologize for the duplication, but I filed the following bug report:

https://github.com/MetaMask/controllers/issues/880

How can this be fixed?

Research direction

Start by reading the linked MetaMask controllers issue 880, then inspect the provider's token-related entry points; the issue names no files or tests. Clarify whether the provider or controller owns the behavior, and consider the work complete when the responsible component offers a documented, testable way to determine whether a token is already registered in a wallet.
