### Brief description

There are a few requirements to checkpoint scalar values or arrays. In particular, stochastic physics that require the capability early 2026.

Checkpointing of one scalar variable is implemented on trunk in lfric_atm in a bespoke way. This work will create a generic requirement analagous to the system that checkpoints fields.

As a guide, a bespoke solution for one variable was implemented by the following Trac ticket.
