Description

The following code fails
```
describe id_(complex QQ^1)
```

With the following error:
```
error: no method found for applying unhold to:
{ 1 1 }
argument : {0:QQ <--------- QQ :0} (of class VerticalList)
{ | 1 | }
```

The cause appears to be that `expression(ComplexMap)` appears to return a `VerticalList` instead of an `Expression`.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the failure with `describe id_(complex QQ^1)` and inspect how `expression(ComplexMap)` produces its result. Determine why the result is a `VerticalList` rather than an `Expression`; done means the example runs without the reported `unhold` error.
