Description

I'm surprised that this doesn't work:
```m2
i8 : eigenvalues random((ZZ/3)^2, (ZZ/3)^2)
stdio:8:1:(3): error: expected matrix of numbers
```
(Also the error message is bizarre.)

Research direction

Start at the eigenvalues entry point shown in the issue and reproduce the finite-field example over ZZ/3. Determine the expected eigenvalue behavior for finite fields and inspect how the current input validation produces its error. Done means the example has defined, tested behavior and the error message is no longer misleading.
