Description
One of the problems I find is the lack of options to format the plain text file, namely that there seems to be no option to impose hard-wrap at e.g., 80 characters. This makes it cumbersome to read the un-rendered file. The problem is more or less described here.

Research direction
Read the issue and the linked markdown-styleguide discussion first to clarify the desired hard-wrap and whitespace options. Done should mean that plain-text editing supports a defined wrapping width, such as 80 characters, and configurable whitespace-sensitive formatting behavior.
