Focus is very brittle

Often, the focus does not lie with the element one would suspect. This leads to e.g., keystrokes not registering correctly, which is frustrating.

To better investigate this, we want to add a small widget that always displays the currently focused element.

No files, tests, or entry points are named in the issue. Start by locating the focus-handling and widget code, then determine where the currently focused element can be displayed; done means a small widget reliably shows that element while investigating focus-related keystroke problems.
