Lazy calculations

Give the user the ability to control the timing of calculations (stats, etc.)

The issue only requests user control over the timing of calculations such as statistics and names no files, tests, or entry points. First identify where these calculations are performed and how their timing is currently determined; the completion criteria and user-facing control still need to be defined.
