Description
It could be great to just give the editor a command line that gets the bytes as input and output the formatted data. This way anything could work, from a Python script to any binary.

Research direction
The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by locating how the editor currently displays entries and accepts commands, then define the command-line interface and input/output contract; done requires a documented approach that supports external formatters such as Python scripts and binaries.
