Confirm what the docstring appender code does with docstrings with trailing whitespace

(I don't even know what the right thing *to* do is here, or if it matters at all. At the minute we dedent docstrings in order to make sure the deprecation notice at least lines up. But maybe we should preserve whitespace, and maybe even trailing whitespace, who knows).
