Description
I just found myself intuitively expecting that, probably because I'm used to it from scipy io and jsoncpp.
Would you want a PR for that, or is it too non-Julian? (Or is there a caveat which I'm not seeing?)

Research direction
The issue proposes adding file["varname"] and file[:varname] access to MAT.jl, but it names no files, tests, or entry points. First determine whether this interface fits the project and how variable lookup is currently exposed; done would require an agreed design and corresponding behavior.
