Description
Current benchmarking is rather ad-hoc. I would like to use BenchmarkTools.jl but the results from perf/benchmark3.jl is rather different from my own (to the point where those results appear incorrect).
Can also steal code from FixedSizeArrays.

Research direction
Start by reading perf/benchmark3.jl and comparing its results with the reporter’s measurements. Review BenchmarkTools.jl and the benchmarking code from FixedSizeArrays mentioned in the issue. Done means replacing the ad-hoc benchmarking approach with a trustworthy setup whose results agree with independent measurements.
