Description

For making operators like the Airy operator it's helpful to do things like:

D^2 - diagonal(x)

Should we export diagonal to make this easy? It's a risk for conflicting exports, though I don't know of any in the moment.

We could also support

D^2 - x .* I

even though that's not supported in Base.

Research direction

The issue names no files, tests, or implementation entry points. Start by comparing the proposed diagonal(x) export with the alternative x .* I and Julia Base behavior, then establish which API should be supported and what compatibility or export-conflict criteria would define completion.
