Proper way of using temporary credentials

Description
The plugin asks for Access Key and Secret Key whenever Access keys or Temporary credentials option is selected. What is the purpose of temporary credentials then? I assume that plugin should not ask for the keys once we setup the role using the External ID.
Can someone confirm the assumption \ explain the purpose of that please?
