JanusGraph API makes it hard in the getting started guide for a newbie to visually distinguish their required input vs the Gremlin prompt

Attempting to follow the getting started guide that offers to help with evaluation so I can gain intuitions about what JanusGraph can do, how to interact with it usefully, and the costs of managing its infrastructure all of which I'm attempting to do in order to avoid excluding it as a useful tooling choice.

I find it hard to spot what is part of my prompt and what is part of my input and as a result I have this session and am unable to imagine what the problem could be despite 30 years computing experience.
