Description
Currently the re module just converts bytes to strings and does the match using normal string semantics.
As an example, the following (which comes from test_httplib.test_putheader) fails:
import re
assert re.match(b"\s", b"\xa0") is None

Research direction
The issue concerns the Python re module and reproduces through test_httplib.test_putheader; begin by running that test or the shown assertion and compare bytes behavior with normal string matching. Done means bytes patterns and subjects use Python byte semantics, including returning None for the provided example.
