Progress reporting from the node to the wallet?

The node sometimes needs to run some long running operations (for instance, replaying blocks in the ledger DB). Although these operations can generate trace messages (depending on configuration), it would be good if the wallet (frontend) would somehow be able to get some kind of progress report from the node, so that it could show some kind of progress bar, rather than just "waiting" without any feedback to the user.
