Description

Hi, I don't have a Lobste.rs account so I'll comment here: https://harfbuzz.github.io/utilities.html#utilities-command-line-hbsubset is developed as a replacement for pyftsubset and it's much faster (fast CJK subsetting was a design goal). Be sure to use the [latest HarfBuzz](https://github.com/harfbuzz/harfbuzz/releases/) rather than what happens to be in a package repository.

Research direction

Start by locating the project wiki page that discusses pyftsubset, then read the HarfBuzz hb-subset utilities documentation and latest-release note linked in the issue. Done means the wiki mentions hb-subset as a replacement for pyftsubset and points readers toward a current HarfBuzz release.
