Description
The repository is now almost 1 GB in size, which makes cloning it very slow.
I suggest we shrink it down, according to http://stevelorek.com/how-to-shrink-a-git-repository.html, but this will need to be coordinated so everyone can do a fresh clone. Might actually need a fresh fork.

Research direction
Start by reading the linked guide on shrinking a Git repository and assess the repository history to determine what is causing its size. Coordinate the required fresh clones or fork changes with repository users; done means the repository is substantially smaller and the migration plan is communicated.
