Increase /api test coverage

As part of the rush to MVP, while this is a solo-dev project and I can still keep it all in my brain at once, I'm cutting corners on test coverage in the api, where coverage used to be higher. Once things settle down/before any additional devs join the project, increasing test coverage will be a priority.
