Description
Many users record what they eat by typing short meal descriptions such as “2 rotis with dal”, “1 plate rice and curry”, or “chicken sandwich”. However, the system often finds it difficult to correctly calculate the nutritional value or the total calories from these entries.
This happens because users describe their meals in different ways — sometimes without mentioning portion size, ingredients, or cooking method. For example, “dal” can mean many different recipes made with different ingredients and amounts of oil or ghee. As a result, the system either guesses the wrong food item or gives a calorie count that is not accurate.
When the calorie or nutrition estimation is incorrect, users get the wrong idea about what they are eating. This leads to inconsistent nutrition tracking and makes it harder for users to achieve their fitness or diet goals. Over time, users may lose trust in the app if they notice that the results don’t match their real habits or physical progress.
This issue becomes even more challenging in regions where people eat a variety of local or homemade dishes that are not listed in common food databases. Therefore, it’s important to create a smarter and more flexible system that can understand meal descriptions better and provide accurate nutritional information.
