Tailscale/VPN FreshRSS API for mobile/app usage on the go

Hi I have setup fresh rss fully on my NAS put all my feeds up everything is working but I can not seem to get the API working internally within my home or while using my tailscale/vpn to connect to my mobile app(net news wire and reeder). Does this need to be publicly hosted online and have port 80 open? is there a way to selfhost only internally and get the api using a vpn like tailscale?
I tried getting the API working with the ip/address wont connect while i am on my wifi. I tried using the tailscale IP instead of my device ip also no go. I have no error when running the api and getting the google/fever php.
Any guidance/help would be appreciated.
