Per @mikeallbutt
"Maybe this icon could be in the blue header at the top right side, on the left side of where I suggest the settings icon move to. Once clicked, the search opens a global search so that the user can find results from all parts of the data (in comments and activity). The results on the page could be sorted into 2 tabs - contacts and groups - and more tabs added later if desired like custom filters/saved searches."
