line endings are tricky across OSes. see https://github.com/USGS-R/protoloads/pull/60#issuecomment-390804632 and https://github.com/USGS-R/protoloads/issues/61. maybe scipiper can help by suggesting a .gitattributes file at project creation time? look into it.
