Assets and Hazard Modelling

There is a lot of work already completed on hazards and assets, but there is a number of additional steps that could help in making the tool more responsive to community needs.

Directional information about where the hazard is coming from and how that might change impact on assets - so if a tropical storm is approaching from the west, how will that differently impact from a southerly storm? This could include capturing perils to which each asset is exposed - factors in the asset’s location (eg, “located on coast”, or “located in landslide zone”) that pose a risk in the event of a hazard from a particular direction.

Work on modelling hazards including appropriate scales (Richter scale) - link to impacted number of people & impacted assets
For each level of hazard severity, capture the likely direct impacts on the asset (for example, “High impact” – catastrophic destruction; “Medium impact” - substantial loss of service and consequent disruption for months; “Low impact”– disruption limited to a few hours only).

Capture consequences of projected loss or damage: Loss of life, livelihood, economic, social fabric/community access, environmental damage and so on. This is a big modelling job, but we can start simple with broad estimates based on simple calculations.

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by mapping the existing hazard and asset models, then clarify the scope and data design for direction, severity, exposure, impacts, and consequences. Done should include an agreed minimal model and implementation plan for the requested estimates.
