Description

the mask module seems to be looking in a hardcoded place. if you split the image with astropy instead of the split exposure module, it will not open because astropy creates a primary hdu.

Research direction

Start by tracing the mask module's input handling and compare an image split with astropy against one produced by the split exposure module. Reproduce the failure with astropy's primary HDU and verify that the mask module can open and process that image without relying on a hardcoded HDU location.
