Setting up Xcodeproj for development

I am using Xcodeproj to build a tool in helping bootstrap projects with a custom configuration. I'm facing some issues in using Xcodeproj but before I opened any issues, I wanted to delve into the source code and get set up for developing for Xcodeproj so I can verify that they are actually issues.

Is there a guide somewhere that can help me get set up for development for Xcodeproj?
