Black Screen when switching to gamepadui

Im running an I5-9500 (dell 7070 sff) I put in an old amd hd 8570 1gb. It got to steam bigpicture mode. I signed in and then went to terminal to switch mode. It's that point it black screens. I decided the GPU was too old so bought a slightly newer AMD 4100 2gb GPU but this did the same thing. I have even updated the firmware. I can press CTRL+ALT+F3 and it shows the cmd line for 3 seconds then goes back to `_`

If i am quick, I can regain control and get back to desktop mode.

Looking in the `Xorg.0.log` I can see it trying lots of resolutions but failing to load.

It could be my stupid monitor which often causes me headaches... `Samsung Odyssey G9, 5120x1440` I am running it at half resolution though. I have also tried another monitor and now an old TV. could be unrelated.

I am primarily a windows user but happy to dig further if it will help.
Might be worth noting I had the same issue on holoiso.

Anyway, I'm not expecting a fix I just hope this helps, I saw some other people with similar issue.
This was meant to be a trial run for when I finally get a UM690 in february. Hopefully that'll be less troublesome haha.
