This looks smooth in 1.21 but has weird shadows in master

It looks like something is going weird with the triangulation and the triangles aren't parallel to the ellipsoid surface. The triangulation looks weird in 1.21 also, it just doesn't have the same coloring differences.

Research direction

Start by running the KML GPD sandcastle example on master and comparing its rendering with version 1.21. Investigate the triangulation and ellipsoid-surface alignment implicated in the report; done means the weird shadows and coloring differences are resolved without the reported non-parallel triangles.
