Update all the dependencies

While working on the release branch for version 2.0, I decided to try updating the dependencies. This turns out to require a lot of code changes, so I'm postponing the work until later. Some of the changes that I already found that will be required are in e6f02cc45562780d7018de54b9a2aa2ac8f0e7e3 on the update-changes branch.
