Add end-to-end tests for VFS APIs

We recently had a regression on the VFS APIs that was not caught by any automation/end-to-end tests. We need to close this test gap and have coverage for those APIs.

Start by locating the VFS API entry points and the repository's existing automation or end-to-end test structure. Add coverage for the VFS APIs described in the issue, then run the relevant end-to-end test suite; done means those APIs are exercised automatically and the reported regression would be detected.
