Why did you guys make TPUs so complicated?

Description
Tokens per minute, I can understand. But TPUs... I have been reading about them for days and I still do not understand them. I have read every description and none of them make any sense. Can you please simplify the explanation or compare it to something else? Is it like we have a water pipe and the number of TPUs determines the width of that pipe?
