Adding DM icons on a per-theme basis

We received a request to add a DM icon to a custom theme option in Independent Publisher 2 theme:

Does direct manipulation in it's current form support adding DM icons to custom theme options on a per-theme basis? If so, could you give any pointers on how to do this?

Start by reviewing the existing direct-manipulation support and how the WordPress Customizer exposes the Independent Publisher 2 Theme Options panel. Confirm whether a per-theme DM icon is supported; done would mean the icon appears for that theme and opens the relevant Theme Options panel.
