Description

I often find myself needing the same group of waypoints during mission planning, but in a different location or orientation. This precludes simply saving a WP file and reusing. It would be outstanding if there was a way to save a group of waypoints to some sort of profile that retains relative location and altitude, then use Auto WP to insert that profile in my current mission plan.

EXAMPLE:
For each of my different plane types, I have a landing pattern (for autolandings) that I have dialed in. Each one is not hard but includes an entry WP, a do_land_start, some speed and flap settings, a loiter to descend, leg distances that create the best landings, etc. Every time I fly at a new location or even create a new mission, I have to recreate the pattern. It's a little tedious, but also gives me one more opportunity to make a mistake. Each pattern should look the same no matter where I fly, just needs to be properly placed at the new location and rotated for wind and runway direction.

I'm envisioning a preview window similar to the survey and grid tools that allows you to select the profile, place it where needed (slide, rotate, etc.) then press accept to place it in the current mission.

Curious to hear others thoughts on this. Anyone else think this would be useful? Is there already a way to do this that I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

Research direction

The issue names Auto WP and the survey and grid tools but no files, tests, or code entry points. Start by locating those tools and determine how waypoint groups are represented; done would mean saving a reusable profile, previewing its placement and rotation, and inserting it into the current mission.
