I think it's good to be transparent about this, but we are going to get a lot of questions about why we are normalizing if this is the case, so we should be prepared to answer those...

I'm opening this issue as a way future reminder for when we get closer to teaching the first spatial workshop. This issue tracks taking some time to make sure we're up to date on any big/relevant development in spatial methods, in particular normalization, that we need to be aware of when teaching.
