Vue-mode won't work out of the box

When it comes to Emacs, I'm pretty wet behind ears so this might very well be my fault. I've installed mmm-mode and vue-mode. I have mmm-mode version 0.5.7 installed and vue-mode version 20190415.231. I use emacs version 28.0.50, doom mode on lubuntu. The package just doesn't seem to make any difference, it doesn't activate with .vue files. Am I missing something? Is it possible that I've messed up the installation? I've used melpa to install both packages.
